  Research Notes:

George son of Richard Avis of Ashurst, labourer, and Charlotte (baptismal record)

-----------------------

In Jun 1846 George Avis was present at the marriage of his brother Richard Avis to Sarah Fry in Tonbridge Kent.

At the time of the 1851 England Census George Avis, age 28, born in Ashurst Kent, farm labourer, and wife Elizabeth, age 27, born in Rotherfield Sussex, were living in -----bank cottage, Ashurst Kent. With them were children Elizabeth* (4) of Lewes Sussex, and George (1) of Ashurst Kent.

* As George and Elizabeth were married in 1849, daughter Elizabeth was most likely her mother's natural-born daughter. As such, she was probably the same as Elizabeth Mary daughter of Elizabeth Bryant, whose name appears in the Ashurst parish register of baptisms immediately above that of her brother George Avis, both christened 7 Apr 1850.

Following the death of George's wife, Elizabeth, in 1854, George had three children by Eliza Dann, elder sister of his future wife, Ann Dann, between 1857 and 1864. There is no indication that George and Eliza were married.

In Aug 1860 George Avis was present at the marriage of his brother James Avis to Sarah Ann Turner in Tonbridge Kent.

It appears that George entered into a relationship with Eliza's younger sister, Ann Dann, by the mid 1860s. They had 5 children together before they were married.

At the time of the 1871 England Census George Avis, age 48, born in Ashurst Kent, widower, journeyman stonemason, was living in North Street, Mayfield Sussex. With him were Ann Dann (24) of Burwash Sussex, general servant, and children: Charlotte Avis* (13) of Frant Sussex, scholar, Robert Avis (9) of Wadhurst Sussex, scholar, and born in Mayfield: George Dann (6), scholar, John Dann (4), scholar, Thomas W Dann (2), Henry Dann (1), and Elizabeth Dann (3 weeks).

* According to the GROE birth index, Charlotte and Robert were registered with the family name of AVIS, and mother's maiden-surname as DANN, even though their parents were not married.

At the time of the 1881 England Census George Avis, age 58, born in Ashurst Kent, journeyman stonemason, and wife Ann, age 34, born in Burwash Sussex, were living in Back Lane, Mayfield Sussex. Present were children (all with the family name AVIS and born in Mayfield): John (14), ag lab, Thomas Walter (12), scholar, Alfred Henry (11), scholar, Alice Eliza (10), scholar, James Albert (7), scholar, Elizabeth Ellen (4), Rose Amelia (2) and William Peter (2 mo).
