At the time of the 1851 England Census Elizabeth Avis, age 27, born in Rotherfield Sussex, and husband George Avis, age 28, born in Ashurst Kent, farm labourer, were living in -----bank cottage, Ashurst Kent. With them were children Elizabeth* (4) of Lewes Sussex, and George (1) of Ashurst Kent.
* As George and Elizabeth were married in 1849, daughter Elizabeth was most likely her mother's natural-born daughter. As such, she was probably the same as Elizabeth Mary daughter of Elizabeth Bryant, whose name appears in the Ashurst parish register of baptisms immediately above that of her brother George Avis, both christened 7 Apr 1850.
