In Nov 1856 Eliza Dann was present at the marriage of her sister Harriet Dann to William Blackford in Burwash Sussex.

At the time of the 1861 England Census Eliza Avis, age 24, born in Burwash, married, was in Sparrows Green Rd., Wadhurst Sussex. With her were children: George Avis* (11) of Ashurst Kent, and Charlotte Avis (3) of Frant Sussex.

* George was Eliza's stepson (son of George Avis and Elizabeth Bryant). The GROE birth index confirms that Charlotte's mother was a member of the Dann family, and her baptismal record records her mother's name as Eliza. Eliza Dann was aged 14 years at the time of the 1851 Census and can be identified as the sister of Ann Dann who later married George Avis. ³ However, there is no documentary evidence indicating that Eliza Dann married George Avis, despite the above census entry, and despite her childen being registered under the surname AVIS in the GROE Birth Index; 'natural-born' children were by-and-large registered under their mother's maiden name (such is the case for those children of George Avis and Ann Dann who were born before they were married). Finally, when Eliza died in 1864 (at the same time as her youngest son Charles), her name was recorded as Eliza Avis. It would appear that the local authorities believed George and Eliza to have been married.
