In Apr 1900 John Avis was present at the marriage of his sister Elizabeth Ellen Avis to Charles Gilder in Mayfield Sussex.
In Sep 1900 John Avis was present at the marriage of his sister Rose Amelia Avis to Frederick Newton Jordan in Charlwood Surrey.
At the time of the 1901 England Census John Avis, age 34, born in Mayfield Sussex, hoop maker & binder, and wife Emily, age 36, born in Middlesex, were living in Groombridge Oldtown or Green, Speldhurst Kent. At the time of the 1911 England Census John Avis, age 44, born in Mayfield Sussex, hoop maker & binder, and wife of 20 years Emily, age 47, born in Shorditch London (mother of 3 children), were living in Old Town Groombridge, Speldhurst Kent. With them were sons (born in Groombridge): Gordon (18), domestic gardener, and Merdoch (12); and relative [i.e. brother] James Avis (37) of Mayfield, single, domestic gardener.
In the 1939 Register John Avis (b. 25 Dec 1866), hoop maker, and wife Ethel Avis (b. 25 Jan 1876), unpaid domestic duties, were living in Old Town Groombridge, Kent.

NEVER MISSED EASTER SERVICE
For 66 years, Mr. John Avis, of Old Post Office, Groombridge, sang in the choir of St. John Church — and for 65 years never missed an Easter service.
Mr. Avis, who was verger of the church for 30 years, died on Tuesday. He had celebrated his 86th birthday on Christmas Day.
Born at Mayfield, Mr. Avis was a cooper by trade. He retired about seven years ago.
The funeral takes place at St. John's Church at noon to-morrow (Saturday).
