Richard son of Elizabeth Bristead born August 13th baptised Sepr 27th 1795 (baptismal record)
-------------------------
Richard was born fifteen months before his parents were married, such that his birth and baptism were registered under his mother's maiden name.
Richard's eldest daughter from his first marriage, Emily, was christened Emily Bristed on 31 May 1818 in Aylesford Kent, and buried there on 16 August following. Richard's youngest daughter from his first marriage, Mary Ann Bristed, was christened in Aylesford on 3 Jun 1821 and buried there on 1 Mar 1822. Their mother Mary died the following August.
In 1820 Richard Bristed was named as a beneficiary in his father's Will. The wording of this Will suggests that William Page was Richard's biological father, even though William refers to him as Richard Bristed. While Richard's two marriages were recorded under the name Bristed, it is evident from later records that he adopted his father's surname.
Richard initially took on his father's trade of carpenter, as recorded in the baptismal entries for his children between 1818 and 1832, although around 1829 he appears to have worked briefly as a millwright while in Surrey where his son Edwin Edward was born. 1829 is the last recorded instance of Richard using the family name Bristed. By the following year Richard and his family had returned to Kent and were living for a while in Tunbridge Wells where daughters Mercy Ann and Mary were born. From that period onward he gave his name as Richard Bristed Page.
At the time of the 1841 Wales Census Richard Page, aged about 45, engineer, and wife Elizabeth, aged about 35, were living in Custom House St., Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire. With them were children: Edwin (12), Mercy Ann (10), Mary (8), Richard (5), George (3) and Edward (4 months).
Richard Page was bequeathed £10 in the Will of his uncle Richard Bristed of St. Pancras, gent. (written 1832, proved 1844).
At the time of the 1851 Wales Census Richard Page, aged 55, born in Kent, engineer and harbour master, and wife Eliza, aged 45, born in Rochester Kent, were living at 1 Seaview Place, Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire. With them were children Mary (20) of Tunbridge Wells Kent, Mary (18) of Tunbridge Wells Kent, and born in Aberystwyth: Richard (15), draftsman, George (13), scholar, Eliza (10), Ellen (5), Arthur (1).
