In 1749 Richard and his siblings, as children of John Bristed deceased, were bequeathed £5 each in the Will of their father's cousin Richard Bristed of Warbleton, gent. As John Bristed's children were minors at this time, the money was paid to their uncle Richard Bristed for their use.

In 1796 Richard Bristed was a beneficiary of the Will of his uncle Richard Bristed of Warbleton, yeoman, who identifies him as his nephew, son of his brother John Bristed.

1 Harrietsham St. John Kent Parish Registers, Baptisms. Mother's name incorrectly recorded as 'Mary.' The entries either side in the register show Catherine as the wife of John Bristed; moreover, there is no marriage record for John Bristed and Mary, nor is there a burial entry for Mary Bristed within the requisite time period. Note also that Richard's first-born child and eldest daughter was named 'Kitty,' which, like 'Katy,' is a diminutive form of Katherine.
