At the time of the 1851 England Census Sophia Carey, age 64, born in Firle Sussex, and husband Edward Carey, age 71, born in East Hothly, farmer of 63 acres [employing] 2 labourers, were living in Broyle Lane, Ringmer Sussex. At the same address were daughter Elizabeth Winter (25) and her husband Edward Winter (24), farm labourer, as well as farm servant Edward Winter (15) of Ringmer.
In 1855 Sophia Carey the wife of Edward Carey of Ringmer, farmer, was one of the residuary legatees of the Will of her [step-]father William Stephens of Alciston.
At the time of the 1861 England Census Sophia Carey, age 74, born in Firle Sussex, and husband Edward Carey, age 81, born in E. Hoathly, farmer of 65 acres employing 2 men and 2 boys, were living in Broyle Farm, Ringmer Sussex. Son John Carey and his family were at the same address.

Directs that her property be equally divided between her eldest daughter Caroline wife of Thomas Simmons of Chailey, farmer, her son Joseph Akehurst Carey of Ringmer, farmer, her daughter Mary wife of Benjamin Heasman of Buntingford in co. Herts, carrier, her son John Carey of Ringmer, farmer, her son George Carey of Lewes, carrier, her daughter Harriett wife of George Parker of Ringmer, pensioner, her daughter Elizabeth wife of Edward Winter of Barcombe, farmer, her daughter Naomi wife of Charles Fiest of Ringmer, farmer, and her daughter Sarah Ann wife of Amos Eldridge of the Royal Artillery, soldier.
