Lot 1.—A BRICK BUILT BARN, and HOVEL adjoining, with slate roof, and 11a. and 16p. or thereabouts, of excellent LAND thereto adjoining and belonging, partly arable and partly pasture, situate at Ashton Green, in the Parish of Ringmer, abutting to lands of Langham Christie, Esq., on the east and south, and now in the occupation of Mr. Joseph A. At the time of the 1861 England Census Joseph A Carey, age 52, born in Alciston Sussex, farmer of 40 acres employing 3 men and 1 boy, and wife Sarah, age 56, born in Ringmer Sussex, were living in Cottage, Broyle Mill, Ringmer Sussex. Son George and his family were living nextdoor.

In Nov 1866 Joseph Akehurst Carey of Ringmer, farmer, was granted Letters of Administration pertaining the personal estate and effects of his late wife Sarah Carey.

At the time of the 1871 England Census Joseph A Carey, age 62, born in Alciston Sussex, widower, farmer of 40 acres [employing] 3 men, was living in Broyle Turnpike, Ringmer Sussex. With him were daughter Harriett Budgen (33) of Ringmer, married, son-in-law John Budgen (35) of Lindfield, ag. lab, carter, niece Clara Packham (21) of Barcombe, general servant, and grandchildren Friend J Budgen (10) of Barcombe, scholar, Emily E Budgen (9) of Barcombe, scholar, Esther Budgen (5) of Barcombe, scholar, Sarah A Budgen (3) of Ringmer, and William Budgen (6 mo) of Ringmer.
