At the time of the 1871 England Census Joseph A Carey, age 62, born in Alciston Sussex, widower, farmer of 40 acres [employing] 3 men, was living in Broyle Turnpike, Ringmer Sussex. With him were daughter Harriett Budgen (33) of Ringmer, married, son-in-law John Budgen (35) of Lindfield, ag. lab, carter, niece Clara Packham (21) of Barcombe, general servant, and grandchildren Friend J Budgen (10) of Barcombe, scholar, Emily E Budgen (9) of Barcombe, scholar, Esther Budgen (5) of Barcombe, scholar, Sarah A Budgen (3) of Ringmer, and William Budgen (6 mo) of Ringmer.
