George son of Edward Cary of Friston, labourer, and Mary [sic] (baptismal record) 1

--------------------------

In Apr 1844 George Carey was present at the marriage of his sister Elizabeth Carey to Edward Winter in South Malling Sussex.

At the time of the 1851 England Census George Cary, age 31, born in Alciston Sussex, carrier to surveyor of highways, and wife Ann, age 30, born in Southover Sussex, were living in Lancaster Street, Lewes St. John-under-the-Castle Sussex. With them were children (born in Lewes): Mary A (12), scholar, George E (1).

At the time of the 1861 England Census George Carey, age 42, born in Lewes Sussex, carman, and wife Ann, age 41, born in Lewes, were living in Spring Gardens, Lewes St. John-under-the-Castle Sussex. With them were children (born in Lewes): Mary Ann (22), house servant, George E. (11), scholar, son A. A. (9), scholar.

In 1865 George Carey of Lewes, carrier, was named as a beneficiary in his mother's Will.

--------------------------

George Carey of The Union died aged 81 years (burial record). While his age as given in the burial entry is the same as that registered in the GROE death index, George was a minor at the time of his marriage in Oct 1837, indicating he would have been born (shortly) after Oct 1816, meaning he died in his 79th year.

  Marriage Information:

George married Ann Diplock, daughter of Thomas Diplock, on 29 Oct 1837 in St. John the Baptist, Southover, Sussex, England. (Ann Diplock was born about 1817 in Southover, Sussex, England and was buried on 24 Oct 1887 in St. John sub Castro, Lewes, Sussex, England.)

1 Friston Sussex Parish Registers, Baptisms, p. 2, no. 10. Both George (1817) and his elder sister Mary (1814) are shown in the Friston parish register as children Edward Cary, labourer, and Mary; their younger sister, Harriot (1820), is recorded in the same register as daughter of Edward Cary, labourer, and Sophia. All three are named in the Will of Sophia Carey widow of Edward Carey, whom she calls her children. There is no record of the marriage of Edward Cary or Carey and Mary in Sussex within the requisite time period. As such the name Mary is undoubtedly a clerical error.
