In 1780 Mercy Smith renounced her right to Letters of Administration of the personal effects of her late husband John Smith 'the younger' of Bexhill, who died intestate. Her children, Ann Smith, aged about 11 years, Sarah Smith, aged about 9 years, and John Smith, aged about 7 years, elected their mother Mercy Smith, widow, to be their Guardian. Mercy consented for Thomas Jenner and William Sinnock, her late husband's creditors, to receive the Letters of Administration. 5

Writing his Will in 1792 William Sinnock of Bexhill, yeoman, bequeathed £50 each to his nieces Ann Smith and Sarah Smith, and to his sister Mercy the wife of James Cruttenden, his said nieces Ann Smith and Sarah Smith, being daughters of his said sister Mercy Cruttenden by her first husband John Smith deceased.
In 1802 Mercy the wife of James Cruttenden was a beneficiary of the Will of her late son John Smith of Bexhill, yeoman.
In 1816 Mercy the wife of James Cruttenden of Bexhill, labourer, was a beneficiary and the residuary legatee of her husband's Will, he having bequeathed her his copyhold tenement with the garden and backside in little Common in Bexhill, for the term of her natural life.
