-------------------------------

Here lyeth the body of
JOHN MEREDITH of Penhyddgan,
Gent., second son of the
late HUMPHREY MEREDITH of
Pengwern, Esq., who departed
this life the 17th of April,
1740, aged 44. 2

-------------------------------

As transcribed above, the year of John's death shown in "Gleanings from God's Acre", taken from his tombstone in Ceinio Church, was supposedly 1740. However, based on the available evidence, this is a misreading of 1749, as the Will of John Meredith of Penhyddgan in Ceinio, Gent. was written in 1749 and proved the same year (see below). The Inventory of John Meredith's personal effects was taken on 1 May 1749, such that he would have died shortly before then, and 17 April as shown in the above transcription is entirely plausible in this respect. Note also the following:

- Per above, John was still living when his father wrote his Will (1747).

- John names as beneficiaries his brothers Evan Meredith and Hugh Meredith, who are also named as beneficiaries in the Will of John's father, Humphrey Meredith.

- John names his sister Anne, who is also named as a beneficiary in the Will of John's father.

- John names as a beneficiary his sister Mary Bailey; John's father names as a beneficiary his grandson John Baily.

- John's wife Martha Hughes (née Rowlands) in her Will (written 1763, proved 1767) names her brother-in-law Humphrey Meredith of Pengwern, Esq.
