MRS. EMILY DAWSON
LOSS TO ST. LUKES

Parishioners of St. Luke's, Ramsgate, are mourning the death of one of their most esteemed personalities — Mrs. Emily Jane Dawson.

Widow of Mr. George Dawson, who established a well-known commercial hotel at the top of Chatham-street, Mrs. Dawson died on Monday at her home, 4 Hollicondane-road. Aged 88, she had been in failing health for a number of years.

Mrs. Dawson and her husband, who died in February last year, played a great part in the life of St. Luke's Church. She first met him as Miss Emily Child, she sang in the choir of St. Paul's Church, Ramsgate. He assisted the organist there and handed out the hymn books.

When they married at St. George's Church in 1883 Mr. Dawson was a stonemason earning a poor wage. They went to live at 1 Elgar-place, Boundary-road, and Mr. Dawson erected a coffee house in his garden. That was the beginning of what was eventually a flourishing hotel, from which Mr. Dawson retired in 1919, when he and Mrs. Dawson moved to Hollicondane-road.

Mrs. Dawson was born at Buckhurst Hill, Essex, where her father, Mr. George Child, was a carpenter. The family moved to Ramsgate when she was young, and at the age of 12 she went to Charing as a dairymaid. Returning to Ramsgate, she went into service at the residence of Mr. Martin Daniel in Chatham-place, and later at the home of Mr. Owen Daniel, father of Mr. H. Kenyon Daniel, at Norland House.

She often recalled the conditions she worked under 70 years ago. Living in, her "salary" was £12 a year, and she had to provide her own tea. Days off?—one a month !

Although she did not hold any official posts, Mrs. Dawson energetically assisted the various organizations associated with St. Luke's Church, and she was particularly interested in the Mothers' Union and Women's Fellowship.

When they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in 1943 Mr. and Mrs. Dawson received a congratulatory telegram from the King and Queen.

Mrs. Dawson leaves a son and four daughters to mourn their loss. The son is Mr. Arthur Dawson, of Margate-road, and the daughters Mrs. Thomas, of Herne Bay, and Mrs. George Darby, Mrs. W. A. Smith and Mrs. R. Aiano, of Ramsgate.
The funeral at Ramsgate cemetery this (Friday) afternoon will be preceded by a service at St. Luke's Church at 3 o'clock.
