FAMILY TRADITION

Maintaining what might almost be described as a family tradition, MR. ARTHUR DAWSON of 29 Holly-road, Ramsgate, has accepted the appointment of Vicar's Warden at St. Luke's Church, Ramsgate. Mr. Dawson, who is a young 73-year-old, has a strong connection with the parish.

He is to take the place of MR. FREDERICK SIMMONS, of 16 Hollicondane-road, Ramsgate, who is retiring after 15 years service. When I called on genial Mr. Dawson at his neat home this week, he told me that he had been people's warden at the church about two years ago. His father had been warden there at one time, and when he was a stone-mason, worked on the church's chancel....

As our conversation turned to other subjects, I learnt that his son MORRIS, now in his late 30's, is returning to Thanet next month, having served five years with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Morris, who was with the R.A.F. during the war and saw six years in India, became interested in joining the Canadian Air Force while serving with the Auxiliary Air Force in this country. Having joined, he served three years in Germany, and for the last two years has been stationed in Alberta, Canada.

Mr. Dawson, jun., is motoring across Canada to Halifax, Nova Scotia, with his wife, his daughter, aged 13, and his nine-year-old son. When they arrive in Thanet they will stay in Margate.

50 YEARS WED

HOME IS NEAR SCHOOL WHERE THEY MET

At the age of three, Arthur Dawson and Florence Stead were playmates and pupils at St. Luke's School, Ramsgate. That was nearly 70 years ago and today (Friday) they celebrate 50 years of married life.

Seventy-six-year-old Mr. Dawson and his wife, who is 75, live at Holly-road, Ramsgate — just round the corner from the school where they met.

Mrs. Dawson, whose half-brother, Harry Stead, was once mayor of Ramsgate, left St. Luke's School at 13, returned at 14 as a monitress and remained there as an assistant teacher until her marriage.

Superintendent of Ramsgate Corps of the St. John Ambulance Brigade and a member for 16 years, Mr. Dawson served with the Royal Engineers in World War I.

TWO YEARS

He saw action in Gallipoli, Egypt and France, and was with the 52nd Lowland Regiment when it walked from Jaffa to Suez — a trek that lasted two years.

Mr. Dawson's father was the owner of the Dawson's Hotel, Ramsgate, and, until 1928, the son was assistant manager in the business. During World War II he was a member of the A.R.P.

Among the guests at Mr. and Mrs. Dawson's party today will be their son and daughter.

Charities benefit from £4,000 will

Of the £4,419 net left by Mr. Peter Robert Thomas Privett of Elmstone-road, Ramsgate, who died on June 18, £150 is to be divided equally between the Railway Mission, the Evangelical Union of South America and the British and Foreign Bible Society.

To the executor, Arthur W. Dawson of Holly-road, Ramsgate, £500 was left, the residue to go to Mr. Privett's daughter Grace. In the event of her predecease one half will go to the Railway Mission and one half to St. Luke's parish for ecclesiastical purposes.

ST. LUKE'S IS ARTHUR'S LIFE

The oldest member of St. Luke's congregation is 91-year-old Arthur Dawson, of Holly-road, Ramsgate.

Not only does he remember when the church first opened but his father was an apprentice stonemason who helped build St. Luke's and his grandfather, a carpenter, made some of the pews which are still used today.

Arthur said: "St. Luke's has really been the centre of my life for as far back as I can remember.

"I was a member of the Sunday school, then a Sunday school teacher, a choir member, a sidesman and church-warden and also secretary of the church council.

I have seen many changes in personnel, service structure, decor and congregation numbers at St. Luke's.

"I still think it is one of the best churches in Thanet.

"Different Vicars have different policies on how a church should be run but in my lifetime I have never felt the need to go to another church than St. Luke's."

Mr. Dawson, who has been associated all his life with St. John Ambulance Corps, is a Ramsgatonian and many older residents may remember the family-owned hotel and garage at the junction of High-street and Boundary-road.
