THE LATE MR. WENHAM.
Local public life lost one of its most interesting personalities, and Eastbourne a keen, farsighted exponent of its best interests, when after some thirty years' membership of the municipal body Mr. John Thomas Wenham withdrew from the Town Council. A vigorous champion of movements and proposals in which he believed, he invariably expressed his views in resolute, clear-cut language, his personal bearing being, however, wholly free from any suggestion of malevolence or bigotry. A wide knowledge of local conditions, allied to a naturally progressive and independent spirit, lent particular usefulness to the part he took in the Council's administrative work and in debates on controversial topics. It goes without saying, therefore, that his influence was as considerable as it was salutary and that, despite a somewhat trenchant and tenacious manner of delivering himself, he maintained the happiest relations with his colleagues.
