Sheriff of Devonshire, 1261—4, and heir by his father's 2nd marriage.
He fought in Gascony in 1254. He supported the king in his quarrel with the barons as late as 24 Sept. 1264. He afterwards joined the rebels and was made by them Constable of Salisbury Castle 19 Dec 1264. He was appointed joint Captain and Keeper of the Peace in Somerset, Dorset, and Wiltshire in 1266. In 1270 at the request of Edward the king's son, he was pardoned all his debts wherein he was bound at the exchequer or elsewhere. He was granted protection in 1271, he then going to Ireland on business of Edward the king's son. In 1271 he and the Abbot of Tintern were appointed to assess the tallage in the town of Bristol. In 1272 he was granted power to admit into the peace of the king and Edward the king's son such Irishmen who wished to come into it. He was Constable of Bristol Castle before 27 Feb 1274. 2

John de Muscegros of Gloucestershire has made fine with the king by two marks of gold for having respite from his knighthood, concerning which he will pay one mark of gold in the king’s Wardrobe at the immediate St. Martin and one mark of gold at next Easter.

Because John de Muscegros, the king’s valet, is ready to receive the arms of knighthood from the king at the forthcoming feast of St. Edward, for which it is inevitable that he will apply not inconsiderable funds, the king, wishing to do him special grace, grants him that he may have respite until Michaelmas in the forty-fifth year from the £60 which he is bound to pay to him at present at the Exchequer of Michaelmas and at the Exchequer of Easter next to come of the debts of Robert de Muscegros, his father, which the king attermined some time ago at £60 per annum, so that he shall then render £30 there, £30 at the Exchequer of Easter next following, and £60 thus for the aforesaid debts from year to year at the same terms until those debts have been paid to the king.
