Of Brewham, Charlton Musgrove, and Norton, Somerset, and Boddington and Kemerton, Gloucestershire, and, in right of his wife, of Great Finborough, Suffolk, and Fisherton de la Mare, Wiltshire.

Steward of Queen Eleonore of Provence, son and heir of Richard de Muscegros, Knt., of Brewham, Somerset, and Deerhurst, Gloucestershire.

In 1237 he was granted free warren in his demesne land in Boddington, Gloucestershire. He fought in Gascony in 1242. In 1248 the king granted him the cantred of Tradree in Clare in Ireland, he being allowed to fortify a castle there and also to have a market. He subsequently built the first castle at Bunratty, co. Clare. In 1252 he was granted the manor of Stowell, Somerset by his step-son, Nicholas Poyntz. 2

11 Feb 1221, Bytham

Robert de Muscegros has made fine with the king by 300 marks for having his benevolence and a release from the excess that he made towards him in that he took to wife Helewise who was the wife of Hugh Poinz , who was of the king’s gift, without the king’s licence, so that Robert is to render 200 marks of that fine at the below-written terms, namely 50 marks at Easter next forthcoming in the fifth year, 50 marks at St. John the Baptist in the same year, 50 marks at Michaelmas in the same year, and 50 marks at Hilary next following in the sixth year, and he is to render the rest of the same fine, namely 100 marks, at the aforesaid terms in the sixth year. Order that, having taken security from Robert for rendering the aforesaid 300 marks to the king, as aforesaid, he is to cause him to have full seisin without delay of all lands, fees and tenements of Helewise in his bailiwick, and once he has taken that security he is to cause the sheriffs of Kent and Suffolk to know, by his letters, whom the king has signified by his letters that they are to cause Robert to have full seisin of all lands of Helewise in their bailiwicks when it is established by his letters that he has accepted the aforesaid security from Robert for the aforesaid fine.

Pledges of Robert de Muscegros for rendering 100 marks at Michaelmas in the fifth year: John Russell, 20 marks Richard de Muscegros, father of the same Robert, 20 marks Godfrey of Crowcombe , 20 marks Richard de Muscegros, the first-born of the same Robert, 20 marks Richard de Muscegros junior, 20 marks.

28 Oct 1230, Portsmouth

The king has granted to his beloved and faithful Robert de Muscegros that, of the fine he made with him by rendering 100 marks per annum at two terms until he has rendered all debts to the king that he owes, he may henceforth render 50 marks until all debts that he owes are paid at the Exchequer, namely 25 marks at the Exchequer of Michaelmas and 25 m. at the Exchequer of Easter. Order to permit this to be done thus. If he caused his livestock to be taken by the aforesaid reason, he is to cause it to be delivered without delay.

The king has committed to his beloved and faithful Robert de Muscegros his vills of Marlborough and Ludgershall, with his castles and other appurtenaces, to keep at his costs for as long as pleases the king from Michaelmas in the nineteenth year , rendering £120 each year for this at the Exchequer at two terms, namely £60 at Easter and £60 at Michaelmas.

Robert de Muscegros has made fine with the king by 200 marks for having custody of the land formerly of William Avenel until the full age of his daughter and heiress, together with the custody and marriage of the same heiress, so that Robert is to render 50 marks per annum of the aforesaid fine, namely 25 marks at Michaelmas in the twentieth year, 25 marks at Easter in the twenty-first year, and 50 marks thus each year from year to year until the aforesaid fine is paid to the king. If death befalls the aforesaid heiress before that fine is paid to the king, Robert is to be quit from that which will then need to be rendered to the king. Order to the constable of St. Briavels to cause him to have full seisin of all lands and tenements formerly of the aforesaid William in his bailiwick, together with the aforesaid heiress, as aforesaid.

The king has betaken himself to Robert de Muscegros for the £100 which Herbert fitz Peter owes to the king for his relief, and the king has granted him that he is to render the aforesaid £100 within four years, namely £12 10s. at Michaelmas in the twenty-eighth year, £12 10s. at Easter next following, and £25 thus from year to year at the same terms until the abovesaid £100 are paid to the king. Order to cause Herbert to be quit from the aforesaid £100 and to cause Robert to have the aforesaid terms.

The king has granted to Robert de Muscegros that, of the £9 7s. 5d. of the chattels of John of Aldham in Kent, of £424 10s. of several debts, of the moiety of 25 marks 6s. 8d. of the debts of William Malet in Somerset, of £6 11s. 4d. of the aid for marrying the king’s daughter, of £100 for Herbert son of Peter in Hampshire, of 300 marks for having the custody of the land and heirs of Geoffrey Esturmy, of £37 of the debts of Bonefill’, Jewess of Bristol, and of 40 marks of the debts of Jacob of Oxford, Jew of Bristol, he may render £60 annually at the Exchequer for all of the aforesaid debts, whereas he previously ought to have rendered £40 per annum, namely a moiety at the Exchequer of Easter, the other moiety at the Exchequer of Michaelmas next following and £60 thus from year to year at the same terms until the aforesaid debts have been paid to the king. If Robert happens to die before he has paid all of the aforesaid debts to the king, the king, for himself and his heirs, grants that Robert’s heirs may recover and keep the same terms until the full payment of the same debts.

Order to the king’s escheator in Somerset to take into the king’s hand all the lands formerly of Robert de Muscegros in his bailiwick and to cause them to be kept safely until the king orders otherwise, not allowing moreover anything from the goods or chattels formerly of the same Robert to be distrained or alienated by the bailiffs of the same lands or any others, but to assign law-worthy and faithful men who with those bailiffs are to have custody of the aforesaid lands and of the goods and chattels of the same by tallies and writings in respect thereof to be made between them, so that they are able to faithfully answer therefor.

Because Robert de Muscegros has died, order to Reginald de Acle, constable of Marlborough, to take good care of the castle of Marlborough with all things pertaining to the same castle that was in the custody of the same Robert and to keep it safely until the king orders otherwise.

Botinton manor, 1/3 part held of the fee of the earl of Gloucester as of Kenemerton msmor by ¼ knight's fee ; another third held of the fee of the abbot of Westminster, paying to Sir Roger de Derneford 28s. 4d. ; and the other held of the fee of the prior of Derherst, paying 7s. 2d.

Hetherle, 1 carucate held of the fee of the earl marshal for 1/3 knight's fee.

Norteclive, 6 bovates land held of tiie fee of the prior of Derherst, paying 4a.
