At the time of the 1851 England Census William Simmons, age 18, born in Lewes Sussex, single, farm labourer, was with his sister Jane Simmons, age 20, born in Lewes, single, farmer's daughter, in Chailey Sussex. Visiting was William's [aunt] Naomi Carey (25) of Malling, unmarried, and her natural-born daughter Emily Carey of Cuckfield (6 months).

At the time of the 1861 England Census William Simmons, age 28, born in Lewes Sussex, carter (ag lab), was with his parents in Wares, Chailey Sussex.

At the time of the 1871 England Census William Simmons, age 37, born in Lewes Sussex, farmer of 100 acres employing two men, and wife Emily, age 27, born in Horsted Keynes Sussex, were living in Sliders, Fletching Sussex. With them were children (born in Fletching): Emily (2), William (3 mo).

At the time of the 1881 England Census William G Simmons, age 48, born in Lewes Sussex, ag labourer, and wife Emily, age 37, born in Horsted Keynes Sussex, were living in Chailey Sussex. With them were children (born in Fletching): Emily (12), scholar, William (10), scholar, Alfred (8), scholar, Eliza (6), scholar, and Caroline (2) of Ardingly Sussex.

At the time of the 1891 England Census William Simmons, age 58, born in Lewes, farmer, and wife Emily, age 47, born in Horsted Keynes, were living in Medhurst, Lindfield Road, Horsted Keynes Sussex. Present were children William (20) of Fletching, agricultural labourer, Eliza (16) of Fletching, and Caroline (12) of Ardingly, scholar. Emily's widowed mother, Emily Oram, was living nextdoor.
