At the time of the 1901 England Census Emily Simmons, age 32, born in Fletching, single, was with her widowed mother in Midhurst Farm, Horsted Keynes Sussex.

At the time of the 1911 England Census Emily Smith, age 42, born in Dane Hill Sussex (mother of 3 children), and husband of 7 years John Smith, age 48, born in Lindfield Sussex, farm labourer, were living in Warr's farm, Chailey Sussex. With them were children: Ellen Jane Smith* (16) of Chailey, Caroline Mary Smith* (13) of Chailey, school, William Henry Smith (7) of Lindfield, Alice Emily Smith (5) of Lindfield, and Ada Rose Smith (1) of Chailey.

* John's daughters by a previous marriage.

In the 1939 Register Emily Smith (b. 9 Aug 1868), unpaid domestic duties, and husband John Smith (b. 14 Apr 1862), general labourer, were living in Lilac Cottage, Newick, Sussex. At the same address were [children]: William H Smith (b. 20 Feb 1904), general labourer, Alice E Smith (b. 3 Oct 1902*), daily maid, Ada R Smith (b. 3 Mar 1910), daily maid.

* This is an error. Alice Emily Smith was born in 1905, as shown in the GROE birth index (mother's maiden-surname SIMMONS).

John Smith was a nephew of William Billinghurst, husband of Emily's aunt Mary Ann Simmons. William and Mary Ann Billinghurst were staying with John Smith in North Common Chailey at the time of the 1901 England Census. John Smith was at that time a widower.
