At the time of the 1880 U.S. Federal Census Joseph Vivian, aged 25, born in England, miner, and wife Mary J. Vivian, aged 23, born in Pennsylvania, keeping house, were living in Champion, Marquette, Michigan. With them were children (born in Michigan) James H. (7), at school, Frances (3), Laura (4 months)

In 1900 Joseph Vivian, aged 44, born in England, gold miner, and wife of 27 years Mary J. Vivian, aged 43, born in Pennsylvania, mother of 4 children, were living in Goldfield, Teller, Colorado. With them were son Joseph (18) of Michigan, grandson John Moss (3) of Colorado, brother John E. Vivian (51) of England, widowed, gold miner.
