DEATH OF MR. A. E. THOMAS.

News reached Camborne, on Saturday, of the death at Barmouth, on Friday, of Mr. Albert Ernest Thomas, the fifth surviving son of the late Capt. Josiah Thomas, of Dolcoath Mine. Mr. A. E. Thomas landed at Plymouth on May 16th from the Federated Malay States, where he had been engaged since the end of 1920, and his health was in a critical state, due to his visits to tropical countries. He was met by his brother, Mr. R. Arthur Thomas, of Dolcoath Mine, who accompanied him to Barmouth, and death took place just nine days later.

Mr. A. E. Thomas was a well known mining engineer and was experienced in mining both at home and in foreign countries. He had made several trips abroad visiting mining properties. He came from a famous mining family and was educated at Sheffield College and Camborne School of Mines. On the completion of his training he went to South Africa, and later to Western Australia, where he became a member of the Legislative Assembly. Here he married Miss Warrington, a Colonial lady of Cornish descent, and both returned to England in 1902.*

During his stay at Camborne he assisted the candidature of Mr. Norman Chamberlain, Unionist candidate, and his speeches on behalf of Tariff Reform will long be remembered. He was an excellent platform speaker, a sound Imperialist, and a first class debater. Later he managed a group of lead mines in Shropshire, and subsequently visited the United States, Brazil, Nigeria, Spain, Portugal, and the Federal Malay States.

In Freemasonry he took a great interest, and was initiated in the Cornubian Lodge (No. 450 Hayle), by his brother, Mr. Fred W. Thomas, who was then Worshipful Master. Since then he has taken thirty-two degrees in Masonry.

He leaves a widow and two daughters at Barmouth.

The remains are being brought to Camborne for interment in the family vault at Centenary Wesleyan Church, on Tuesday.

* The year appears to be incorrect, as the birth of his daughter Mary was registed in 1908 in the Coolgardie district, W.A.
