OBITUARY.
MRS. A. H. BRISTED.
Mrs. Bristed, wife of Mr. A. H. Bristed, who recently retired from the editorship of the "Weekly Press" and "The Referee," died at her residence, Avonside, at 6.40 p.m. yesterday, after an illness extending over five or six months. Altrhough her condition during that time occasioned the gravest concern, she frequently rallied for weeks at a time, causing her friends to be hopeful of her ultimate recovery, but on Tuesday evening she became definitely worse, and her family realised that the end was fast approaching.
Mrs. Bristed was a daughter of the late Mr. E. G. Griffith, a genial and cultured English journalist, who from 1882 to 1889 was sporting editor of the "Weekly Press," for which journal he wrote under the nom de plume of "Senex." She had lived practically all her life in Christchurch, where her splendid spirit of citizenship had been an inspiration to all with whom she came in contact, and her self-sacrificing work for others will long be remembered with gratitude.
During the war, though sadly stricken by personal grief, she worked like a Trojan for the Red Cross and Patriotic Societies. For years she was a member of the committee of the Plunket Society, which in its struggling infancy owed much to the invaluable work done by her and her husband. Until a few years ago she acted as the Society's secretary, and two years ago, during the absence in England of Mrs. J. Cracroft Wilson, she was elected president of the Society.
In her youth she excelled in sports, being a fine swimmer and diver, and a good tennis player. She was a member of the Christchurch Ladies' Golf Club at the time of her death, and had been a regular player on the links until the end of last season, when her health first became seriously impaired. She was also a foundation member of the Queen's Club.
But it was because of her great kindness of heart, her genius for finding the good in others, and her delightful whimsical humour that Mrs. Bristed was so greatly beloved and esteemed. Her good deeds were legion, and her fine outlook on life, her gallant spirit in time of sadness and sorrow, and her ever-ready sympathy with those in trouble had won her an enviable position in the hearts of Christchurch citizens, by hosts of whom she will be sadly missed.
She is survived by a sorrowing husband, two sons, Mr. Jack Bristed, supervisor for the Eastern Extension Company, Adelaide, and Mr. Griffith Bristed, of Christchurch, and one daughter, Miss Kathleen Bristed. Her eldest son, Lieutenant Ned Bristed was killed in France in 1917. Her sister, Mrs. Simpson of the West Coast, and her brother Mr. Fk. Griffith, of North Canterbury, are also in Christchurch at present.
