At the time of the 1861 Scotland Census Hugh Cowan, aged 31, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, boot & shoemaker, and wife Janet, aged 32, born in Tarbolton, milliner, were living at 1 West Port St., Tarbolton. With them was son John (11 months) of Tarbolton.
At the time of the 1871 Scotland Census Hugh Cowan, aged 41, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, boot & shoemaker, and wife Janet, aged 41, born in Tarbolton, were living in George St., St. Quivox Ayrshire. With them were children (all except Elizabeth born in Tarbolton): John (10), scholar, Robert (7), scholar, Jessie (7), scholar, Hugh (2), Elizabeth (5 months) of Ayr.
