At the time of the 1841 Scotland Census John Cowan, aged about 45, born in Ayrshire, ag. lab., and wife Jean, aged about 45, were living in Alton Burn, Tarbolton, Ayrshire. With them were children: Mary (17), Hugh (11), Jean (9), Margaret (5), Elisabeth (3), Sophia (6 months).

At the time of the 1851 Scotland Census John Cowan, aged 56, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, farmer of 8 acres & forrester employing 6 labourers, and wife Jean, aged 56, born in Tarbolton, were living in Altonburn Cottage, Tarbolton. With them were children (all born in Tarbolton): Mary (27), muslin embroiderer, Hugh (21), shoe maker, Jean (18), muslin embroiderer, Elizabeth (13), muslin embroiderer, Sophia (10), scholar.

At the time of the 1861 Scotland Census John Cowan, aged 66, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, contractor, and wife Jean, aged 66, born in Tarbolton, contractor's wife, were living in Alton Burn, Tarbolton.
