At the time of the 1861 Scotland Census John Cowan, aged 66, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, contractor, and wife Jean, aged 66, born in Tarbolton, contractor's wife, were living in Alton Burn, Tarbolton. With them were daughters (both born in Tarbolton): Margaret (25), Sophia (16); granddaughter Jean B. Cowan (5) of Tarbolton.
