At the time of the 1861 Scotland Census Jane Cowan, aged 27, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, domestic servant, was in Shaw Fue? Church House, Ochiltree, Ayrshire. Jane and her younger sister Elizabeth were working for the minister's wife, Jane J. Livingston

At the time of the 1881 Scotland Census Jane Cowan, aged 47 years, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, domestic cook, was in F. C. Manse, Ochiltree, Ayrshire. Jane and her niece Margaret Barclay (21) were working for Revd. Neil Livingston and his wife Jane.

In February 1890 Jane Cowan was present at the marriage of her sister Margaret Cowan to David Mackie in Tarbolton Ayrshire.

At the time of the 1891 Scotland Census Jane Cowan, aged 58, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, housekeeper, was in Corner House, 14 Cunningham St. & 1 Sandgate St., Ayrshire. Jane was staying with her sister Elizabeth Richard & her husband John.

At the time of the 1901 Scotland Census Jane Cowan, aged 67, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, was living at 1 Sandgate St., Tarbolton, Ayrshire.
