At the time of the 1851 England Census Sarah Elphick, aged 32, born in Hastings Sussex, married, was working as a house servant in Hastings St. Clement. The whereabouts of her husband George at this time and in the ensuing decades has not been determined.
At the time of the 1861 England Census Sarah Elphick, aged 42, born in Hastings Sussex, married, was working as a cook at 43 Millington Sqr., St. Mary in the Castle Hastings.
At the time of the 1871 England Census Sarah Elphie, aged 52, born in Sussex, married, laundress, was with her brother[-in-law] Robert Elphie and his family at 2 Nash's Cottages, Croydon Surrey.
At the time of the 1891 England Census Sarah Elphick, aged 72, born in Hastings Sussex, widow, was with her niece Emily S Elphick, laundress, at 14 Eagle Hill, Croydon Surrey.
