In 1851, Richard Jones (32) of Llanfrothen, unmarried, farmer of 185 acres employing 4 labourers, was living in Tyfry Llanfrothen. Present was niece Mary Griffith* (21) of Llanfair, housekeeper.
* Richard married Mary Griffith in the following year. She was Richard's cousin, not his niece. Mary's father, John Griffith of Llanfair, farmer (b.c. 1800), was the son of Eleanor Jones (Richard's aunt), whose husband was Morris Griffith (d. 1835); John Griffith born between 1798 and 1800, was named in the Will of Tryphena Williams, Richard's grandmother.

* As Jane was the aunt of Richard's children (see below), she could not also have been his niece. At the time of the 1871 Census, Richard's children John and Margaret were staying with Jane Griffith in Ynyscynhaiarn. Jane's brother William Griffith was also there. Jane and William were children of John Griffith, a farmer of Llanfair Merioneth. Jane was a sister of Mary Griffith (above) who married Richard Jones and therefore his sister-in-law.
