At the time of the 1861 England Census Martha Locke, aged 36, born in Hastings Sussex, unmarried, was working as a lady's maid in Barham Court, Teston Kent.

At the time of the 1871 England Census Martha Coulthwaite, aged 46, born in Hastings Sussex, and husband Simeon Coulthwaite, aged 49, born in Burton Westmorland, school master, were living in Teston Street, Teston Kent. With them were Simeon's children (unmarried, born in Teston): Rose Ellen (20), Anne (13), scholar, and James (11), scholar.
