Thomas son of John Hall and Elizabeth Chesterman (baptismal record)

----------------------------------------

This family was living in Broad Hinton in the early 1690s where Thomas and Mary's eldest son, also Thomas, was born. By the second half of the 1690s the family had moved to Tockenham, about 5 miles distance, where Mary, Michael, Elizabeth and Anne were born. On 16 Aug 1697, in Tockenham Wick, on a Certificate which was drawn up "of all ye names & sirnames &c of all & every person residing within ye said parish together with an assessment made by virtue of an Act of Parliament intituted An Act for granting to his majestie certaine rates & duties upon Marriages Births and Buryalls Batchellors &c for five years", the names of Thomas Chesterman, his wife Mary, and their two children, Thomas and Mary, appear. 3

After 1700 the family was in Clyffe Pypard (about 3 miles from Tockenham), where three-year old son "Michael Chesterman of Tockenham" was buried in 1702. Thomas & Mary's first child born in Clyffe Pypard was a second Michael in 1704.

Thomas Chesterman of Tockenham was the sole executor of the Will of his cousin Grace Chesterman of Clyffe Pypard, widow (written 1698, proved 1704). 4

In Dec 1709 Thomas Chesterman was one of those who took inventory of the goods & chattels of his father-in-law Thomas Humphries Snr. of Broad Hinton. 5

  Marriage Information:

Thomas married Mary Humphries, daughter of Thomas Humphries of Broad Hinton and Margery Phillips, about 1693. (Mary Humphries was christened on 9 Jun 1669 in Broad Hinton, Wiltshire, England and was buried 14 Nov 1741 in Clyffe Pypard St. Peter, Wiltshire, England.)

1 Clyffe Pypard Parish Registers, Baptisms. There is no record of a Thomas Chesterman born in Wiltshire between 1650 and 1675. A Thomas Chesterman was born in Christian Malford in 1683/4, too late to have been this Thomas who married about 1693 (Thomas, son of Thomas Chesterman and Mary, was christened 1 Jan 1693/4 in Broad Hinton, which the evidence indicates is where Mary came from.)

2 Ibid., Burials.

3 Tockenham Wick.

4 Grace was the widow of Michael Chesterman of Clyffe Pypard (d. 1691), 1st cousin of Thomas's mother. It is likely that Grace and Michael were also cousins of a sort (see notes on their respective pages).

5 Probate records of the Archdeaconry of Wiltshire, P3/H/902. Thomas Chesterman's wife, Mary Chesterman, was named by Thomas Humphries in his Will as his daughter and mother of Thomas Chesterman, Mary Chesterman and other unnamed children to whom he also made bequests.
