At the time of the 1881 England Census James P Avis, age 27, born in Southboro' Kent, ag lab, and wife Ellen, age 27, born in Southboro', were living in Speldhurst Kent. With them were daughters (born in Southboro'): Phillis E (5), scholar, and Rosetta (2). Boarding was Harry Johnson* (20) of Southboro', ag lab.

DEATH OF MRS.* AVIS. — The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr. James Peter Avis, aged 80, of 91, Edward-street, and the funeral will take place on Saturday at Southborough Cemetery, conducted the Rev. A. Ross Sage. Messrs. T. Potters will direct the funeral arrangements.
