At the time of the 1911 England Census James Peter Avis, age 17, born in East Peckham Kent, baker, was with [his sister] Rosetta Anderson and her family at 34 Forge Road Southborough nr Tunbridge Wells Kent.

In the 1939 Register James P Avis (b. 8 May 1894), warehouseman (grocer), and wife Blanche Avis (b. 21 Jun 1888), household duties (unpaid), were living at 10 Prospect Road, Southborough Kent. At the same address were [children, single]: Eileen R Avis (b. 7 Nov 1920), shorthand typist, Blanche E (Elizabeth) Avis (b. 15 Jan 1923), temporary civil servant, and Jack Avis (b. 13 Sep 1930), at school.

DEATH OF MR. J. P. AVIS. — The funeral of Mr. James Peter Avis took place on Wednesday. The late Mr. Avis, who was 46 years of age, had lived in Southborough nearly all his life, coming here when a boy. He was a member of the "Hand and Sceptre Lodge of Oddfellows." The funeral service in St. Thomas' Church was conducted by Canon J. R. Gretton (Vicar of St. Thomas'). The mourners included his Wife, the Misses Eileen and Betty Avis (daughters), Mrs. Anderson (sister), Mrs. Dear (sister) and Mr. Dear, Mr. and Mrs. Russell, Mr. W. Blackwell, Mr. Jack Taylor.... Mr. Avis leaves a widow, two sons (one in the Army) and two daughters.

AVIS.—On September 12th, James Peter Avis, beloved husband of Blanche Avis, 10 Prospect-road, Southborough.
