  Research Notes:

In 1801 John Yorke was co-executor of his father's Will, from which he received the tenement he now lives in, with its garden and premises in the parish of Wootton Bassett, as well as 4 acres of arable land in Swindon and two meadows in the parish of Stratton St. Margaret.

In 1813 John Yorke of Wootton Bassett was a trustee and co-executor of the Will of his brother-in-law Paul Woodward of Bath.

In 1841 John York, aged about 75, ind[ependent], and wife Ann York, aged about 60, were living in High Street, Wootton Bassett Wilts. With them were children Sarah York (25), Jane York (23), William Yorke (35), carpenter, and [granddaughter] Ann Fowler (12).

Abstract of the Will of John Yorke of Wootton Bassett in the County of Wilts, Gentleman, written 19 Mar 1842, proved 24 Feb 1844. 4

Devises to his wife Ann all his houses, messuages, tenements, lands and hereditaments in the parishes of Wootton Bassett and Stratton St. Margarets, for the term of her natural life. After her death he bequeaths a tenement, yard and premises in Wootton Bassett to his son William, a tenement, garden and premises in Wootton Bassett to his son John Maskelyne Yorke, a messuage garden and premises in Wootton Bassett which he currently occupies, to his daughters Sarah and Jane.

Devises to his son William all his carpentry tools, his gilt watch chain & seals.

Gives & bequeaths to his wife all his wine, beer, spirits, other liquors, and use of his household goods and furniture, plate, linen, books, china, barrels... for the term of her natural life, whereafter he wills the same to his daughters Sarah and Jane, share and share alike.

Gives and bequeaths £50 each to his daughters Sarah and Jane.

Gives & bequeaths to his sons William and John Maskelyne two silver tablespoons each.

Bequeaths £200 to each of his children, William, John Maskelyne, Sarah and Jane, in trust, with the interest from the legacy going to his granddaughter Ann Yorke Fowler.

Appoints his wife, his son William, his son John and his daughter Sarah, co-executors of his last will and testament.

  Marriage Information:

John married Anne Maskelyne, daughter of Edmund Maskelyne and Lucy Rumboll, on 22 Apr 1801 in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, England. (Anne Maskelyne was christened 19 May 1773 in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, England and was buried there on 23 Sep 1854, aged 81 years.)
