At the time of the 1881 England Census John Carey, age 14, born in Ringmer Sussex, was working as a grocer's assistant to grocer William Berry in The Green, Ringmer Sussex.

At the time of the 1891 England Census John Carey, age 24, born in Ringmer Sussex, single, grocer's assistant, was boarding in Maidstone Kent.

At the time of the 1901 England Census John Carey, age 34, born in Ringmer Sussex, single, grocer, was boarding at 24 Lawes Avenue, Newhaven Sussex.

At the time of the 1911 England Census John Carey, age 42, born in Ringmer Sussex, assurance agent, and wife of 8 years Esther Annie, age 36, born in Newhaven Sussex (mother of 2 children), were living in Blindley Heath, Godstone Surrey. With them were daughters Emily Mary (5) of Newhaven Sussex, school, and Laura (3) of Durrington Sussex.

MR. J. CAREY

The death occurred on Sunday at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, of Mr. John Carey, of 26, Meeching-road, Newhaven.

Mr. Carey, who was 69 years of age, had been in hospital just over week, and was considered well on the road to recovery, but on Sunday he had a relapse and died in his sleep. He was a native of Ringmer and had lived in Newhaven for about 22 years. At one time he was in the employ of Messrs. Bannister and Sons, Ltd., Newhaven and for the last seven years had been working at Wood's Stores, Seaford. He was a great cricket enthusiast, and in his younger days played for Lord Sheffield's team at Sheffield Park. He is survived by a widow and two daughters.

On Wednesday, in accordance with his wishes the remains were cremated at Brighton Crematorium, and the ashes were afterwards scattered in the Garden of Remembrance.

The mourners were Mr. George Carey, Ringmer (brother), Mr. A. L. Newbery, Robertsbridge (son-in-law) and Mr. A. Lower, Gosport (brother-in-law). The staff at Wood's Stores, Seaford, was represented by Messrs. Brown, G. Simmons, S. Thompson and W. Musselle.
