With them were children (born in Tonbridge): Flora Kate (7), scholar, Lewis James (3), scholar, and Frances Elizabeth (8 mo).
At the time of the 1881 England Census James Akehurst, age 36, born in Heathfield Sussex, agr lab, and wife Maria, age 35, born in Tunbridge Wells Kent, were living in Green Lane Cottage, Seal Kent. With them were children: Lewis (13) of Tonbridge, Frances (10) of Tonbridge, scholar, Fanny (8) of Leigh, scholar, Emily (6) of Seal, scholar, Walter (4) of Seal, scholar, and Louisa (1) of Seal.

In Jan 1897 James Akehurst was present at the marriage of his daughter Fanny Maria Akehurst to Matthew Hill in Hildenborough Kent.
At the time of the 1901 England Census James Akehurst, age 56, born in Heathfield Sussex, domestic gardener, and wife Maria, age 55, born in Tun Wells Kent, were living at 15 St. Stephen's St., Tonbridge Kent. With them was granddaughter Beatrice Akehurst (8) of Tunbridge Kent.
