Eadgifu de Wessex

  • Born: Between 902 and 905, Wessex, England
  • Married (1): Between 917 and 919
  • Married (2): 951
  • Died: 26 September, after 951

  Research Notes:

William of Malmesbury names (in order) "Edfleda, Edgiva, Ethelhilda, Ethilda, Edgitha, Elfgiva" as the six daughters of King Eadweard & his wife "Elfleda", specifying that Edgiva married "king Charles". The Book of Hyde names "Edgivam" as second of the six daughters of King Eadweard by his first wife "Elfelmi comitis filia Elfleda", specifying that she married "Karolo regi Francorum filio Lodowyci". Her birth date range is estimated from the birth of Eadgifu's son in [920/21]. If this is correct, Eadgifu must have been one of King Edward's oldest children by his second marriage.

She fled with her two-year-old son to England in 923 after her first husband was deposed. She returned to France in 936.

Abbess of Notre Dame de Laon, until 951. Flodoard records in 951 that “Ottogeba regina mater Ludowici regis” married “Heriberti...Adalberti fratris” and that “rex Ludowicus iratus” confiscated “abbatiam sanctæ Mariæ...Lauduni” from her and donated it to “Gerbergæ uxori suæ”. 1

Eadgifu married Charles III "Le Simple" Caroling, King of the Franks, son of Louis II "le Bègue" Caroling, King of the West Franks, and Adelais d' Angoulême, Queen of the Franks, between 917 and 919. (Charles III "Le Simple" Caroling was born on 17 Sep 879, died on 7 Oct 929 in Péronne, Austrasia and was buried in monastère de Saint-Fursy, Péronne, Austrasia.)

  Marriage Information:

Eadgifu also married Héribert III "le Vieux", comte de Vermandois, son of Héribert II Caroling, comte de Vermandois et de Troyes, and Adèla de Bourgogne. (Héribert III "le Vieux", comte de Vermandois was born between 910 and 926 in Vermandois, Normandy, France and died between 983 and 985.)
