At the time of the 1861 England Census Caroline Belsey, aged 50, born in Hastings Sussex, shoemaker's wife, and husband Henry Belsey, aged 48, born in Hastings, shoemaker, were living at 1 York Cottages, St. Mary in the Castle, Hastings. With them were daughter Jane Belsey* (18) of Hastings, and Caroline's mother Mary Gallop (76) of Hastings, widow.

* Jane Belsey was most likely the daughter of Caroline's sister, Jane, who married James Belsey. Jane died in 1857 and James is absent from the record until his death in 1880. There is no record of two Jane Belseys born between 1841 and 1843 in Hastings. Moreover, whereas Jane's daughter Jane Caroline was named in the Will of John Gallop, Caroline's supposed daughter of the same name was not. As such, Jane Belsey shown here was probably Caroline's adopted daughter.
