At the time of the 1871 Census Sarah Lawless, age 54, born in Lindfield Sussex, widow, was living at 63 West St Brighton Sussex. With her were children Kate (21), unmarried, saleswoman, Teresa (19), Thomas (15), apprentice, grandchild Emily Lawless (4) of Brighton.

In 1881 Sarah Lawless, age 66, born in Lindfield, widow, housekeeper, was living at 63 West St Brighton Sussex. With her were children Martin (37), married, publican, Teresa (29), unmarried, Kate Bick (32), married, boot business, son-in-law George Bick (33), born in Marylebone, boot business, granddau: Emily Lawless (14) of Brighton, scholar.

Abstract of the Will of Sarah Lawless of 63 West Street Brighton in the County of Sussex, Widow of the late Martin Lawless, written 12 Nov 1879, proved 3 Mar 1884. 3

Bequeaths to her eldest son, James Lawless, the gold ring that formerly belonged to his father.

Bequeaths to her second son, Martin Lawless, the twisted bone walking stick and telescope formerly the property of his father.

Bequeaths to her youngest son, Thomas Lawless, her late husband's business as tailor, together with all cloth, shop fittings &c.

Bequeaths a legacy of £10 to her eldest daughter, Mrs. Sarah Daniels, as well as her gold brooch containing a likeness of Sarah's late father.

Bequeaths a legacy of £10 to her second daughter, Mrs. Katharine Beck, as well as her golden brooch with an amber stone set with pearls and garnets.

Bequeaths a legacy of £10 to her third daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Di Villa, as well as her small gold brooch set with a light red stone.

All her furniture, other monies and property she bequeaths to her youngest daughter Theresa Lawless, directing that Theresa pay her funeral and testamentary expenses.

Appoints her son, Martin Lawless, and her nephew, Alfred Keaton Gower*, co-executors of her last will and testament.

Sarah Lawless died 26 Jan 1884 at 63 West Street Brighton, aged 69 years.

* Alfred Keaton Gower (c. 1835-1903), superintendent in charge of schools, was the son of John Coppard Gower and Mary Keaton. John Coppard Gower was Sarah's eldest brother.

Sarah married Martin Lawless about 1841 probably in Dublin, Ireland. (Martin Lawless was born about 1820 in Wexford, Ireland and died on 17 Sep 1870 at 63 West St., Brighton, Sussex, England.)
