Though John Coppard ran a farm in Wivelsfield, he does not appear to have been born there. It is likely he was born in Lindfield (just over 3½ miles away), where he spent the last decade of his life. Lindfield's registers for the period spanning the mid-1700s are not available.

On Monday last, as Mr. John Coppard, of Wivelsfield, was driving his team towards his farm, he trod upon a loose clod of earth, and unfortunately broke his leg.
