In 1871 Thomas Cogar, aged 29, born in St. Ives Cornwall, wharfinger's commercial clerk, and wife Margaret W. Cogar, aged 26, born in St. Agnes Cornwall, were living at 6 Brimington Rd., Camberwell, Surrey. With them were children Thomas (5) of St. Ives, scholar, Eliza V. (2) of Redruth Cornwall, and Susan A. P. (1) of Peckham Surrey.
Thomas Cogar and his family emigrated to New Zealand during the 1870s.
