In July 1838 Joseph Swaine, Jnr., was present at the marriage of his sister Jane Swaine to Matthew Quintrell in Camborne, Cornwall.

In 1841 Joseph Swaine, aged about 30, born in the county, miner, and wife Mary Ann Swaine, aged about 20, born in the county, were living in Penponds, Camborne, Cornwall. With them was Fanny Swine [Swaine] (15), mine girl. Joseph's (father) and (sister) Jane were living nextdoor.

At the time of the 1850 U.S. Federal Census Joseph Swaine, aged 42, born in England, and wife Mary A. Swaine, aged 33, born in England, were living in Dodgeville, Iowa, Wisconsin. With them were children (born in Dodgeville) Ann (4) and Joseph (4 months).
