In 1851 Joseph Hawken, aged 37, born in St. Ervan, farmer of 55 acres employing 2 men, and wife Betsy P Hawken, aged 34, born in St. Ervan Cornwall, were living in Penrose, St. Ervan. With them were children (born in St. Ervan) Joseph (13), scholar, Martha A. (11), scholar, John (9), scholar, James (7), scholar, and William (1).

In 1861 Joseph Hawken, aged 47, born in St. Ervan, farmer of 33 acres, and wife Betsy Paynter Hawken, aged 44, born in St. Ervan, were living in Penrose, St. Ervan. With them were children (born in St. Ervan) Joseph (23), Martha Ann (21), John (19), William (11), and Thomas Henry (9).
