Obituary

ROBERT VIVIAN, 75, of Muskegon died Saturday morning at home. He is survived by his wife Rose Vivian. Previously employed at Norge for 27 years, he retired from Muskegon General Hospital after being employed there 10 years....

"In Memoriam" Obituary

Robert Scott Vivian passed away 24 years ago at his Muskegon home. On September 16, 1989, he was survived by his wife (married May 12, 1934), Rosalie (Rose) Vida; his six children: Stephen, Roberta (Joe) Escareno, David (Mary Amy), Robert (Lois), Margaret (Ron) Kivinski, and Rose Marie Vivian; 14 grandchildren; one great grandchild; and one of his eleven siblings, Alice Bongiorno.

He was born July 5, 1914, in the city of Ishpeming in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to William John Vivian and Emma Permilla Scott. The storied history of their city, his own ancestry, and the magic of trout fishing (well-described by his favorite author, Ishpeming's own John Voelker) were his inherited DNA. His Cornish father, grandfather and uncles were draymen, perhaps instilling his admiration for horses. A tattered sketch of one from his childhood reveals his artistic skills later expressed in precise, self-taught carpentry, leatherwork and metalwork.

Of necessity, he left school to work as a young teen but his keen engineer's mind prompted him often to be deep in thought at the kitchen table pondering a repair or design. He was employed at Norge for 27 years and retired after 10 years with Muskegon General Hospital. We felt so secure in his competence.

By 1989 the red hair of his youth had thinned and turned to gray. He lost his speech and ability to walk after a severe stroke in June, yet his clear blue eyes would speak silently in following days until at last they closed and the curtain was forever drawn on that window to his soul. If you find yourself in the quiet woods where flowing streams and shimmering brooks beckon nature lovers and fly fishermen, you will sense him. He is at peace, casting his line in the sacred rivers of the beyond. 5
