Research Notes:
"AVIS (STEPHENS) MOYLE - A Remarkable Kapunda Woman
"Mrs Avis Moyle of Kapunda, who was 90 last Saturday, had a wonderful birthday party on Sunday, according to Mr. J. S. Pearce (an old Kapunda boy and grandson of the late Hon. James Pearce, M.L.C.) who was in that town during the weekend.... Mrs. Moyle received many telegrams from all over Australia and overseas, including one from Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Coles, now living at Harrowgate, England. The nonogenarian tells how she landed with her parents at Kapunda in a bullock dray, 87 years ago (in 1847) and she remembers the names of those bullocks, too - Deer Boy, Damper, Yellow Man and Spanker. The family camped under a hessian covering by the side of the waggon for a few days after their arrival. Mrs. Moyle's parents kept the Lord Palmerston Hotel for years, and she herself was a popular hostess there. She recalls Captain Bagot's bringing the first stock to Kapunda - three cattle and six sheep - and how Mr. Arthur Crase's grandfather, Mr. James Crase, slaughtered the first beast for sale in his pioneer butcher's shop near the local Baptist Church." 6
