At the time of the 1901 Scotland Census Janet Cowan, aged 17, born in Coylton Ayrshire, dress maker, was in Loudonstonn Cottages, Stair Ayrshire.

In 1902 Janet Cowan was present at the marriage of her sister Mary Ramsay Cowan to James Dickie in Stair.
