At the time of the 1841 Scotland Census Hugh Cowan, aged 36, agricultural labourer, and wife Elizabeth, aged 33, were living in Fail St., Tarbolton Ayrshire. With them were children Janet (10), Margt. (7), Elisabeth (5), and Isabella (2).
At the time of the 1851 Scotland Census Hugh Cowan, aged 47, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, agricultural labourer, and wife Elisabeth, aged 44, born in Craigie Ayrshire, hand sewer, were living in Millarsland, Tarbolton. Present were children (born in Tarbolton): Isabella (12), Shusania (7), Hugh (5), Robert (2), and Grace (4 months).
