At the time of the 1891 Scotland Census Hugh Cowan, aged 20, born in Stair Ayrshire, general labourer, was in Loudonstonn, Ochiltree Ayrshire.

At the time of the 1901 Census for Scotland Hugh Cowan, aged 31, born in Stair Ayrshire, railway telegraph linesman, was lodging with the family of Ellen Learmonth at 155 Cumberland St., Glasgow Govan, Lanarkshire.

In 1921 Hugh was living at 92 Prince Edward St., Crosshill, Glasgow.
