At the time of the 1871 Scotland Census David Thomson, aged 21, born in Tarbolton, box manufacturer's clerk, was with his parents in Smithstone Lodge, Tarbolton.

At the time of the 1881 Scotland Census David Thomson, aged 32, born in Tarbolton, quarry master, and wife Jane B., aged 29, born in Tarbolton, quarry master's wife, were living in Tarbolton. Present was daughter Jane McKail (5 months) of East Kerr in Stirling.
