At the time of the 1851 Scotland Census Hugh Thomson, aged 34, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, H. L. silk weaver, and wife Ann, aged 33, born in Kirkmichael, silk weaver's wife, were living in Tarbolton. With them were children (both born in Tarbolton): Elizabeth (6) and David (1).

At the time of the 1861 Scotland Census Hugh Thomson, aged 45, born in Tarbolton, silk weaver, and wife Anne W., aged 43, born in Kirkmichael, sewed musline worker, were living at 6 Back St., Tarbolton. Present were children (both born in Tarbolton): Elizabeth (16), sewed musline worker, David (11), scholar.

At the time of the 1871 Scotland Census Hugh Thomson, aged 54, born in Tarbolton, gardner, domestic servant, and wife Ann, aged 53, born in Kirkmichael, were living in Smithstone Lodge, Tarbolton.
