Biography. 4

While still a minor Hawkins inherited from his uncle Philip an electoral interest at Grampound, which was managed by his father, in alliance with Thomas Pitt, the Prince of Wales's Cornish election manager. He was returned there in 1747 as a member of the Prince of Wales's party, but did not stand again. He died v.p. 1 Dec. 1766 of an inoculation against smallpox, to which he had submitted as an example to his neighbours, many of whom followed his lead, all recovering but himself.
