The Dictionary of National Biography contradicts the Oxfordshire Visitation by stating that William Tipping (1598-1649) never married and that "[he] has been confused with a relative of the same name who married Ursula, daughter of Sir John Brett of Edmonton." There are a couple of problems with this assertion. To begin with, the article in the Dictionary of National Biography states that "Tipping, who was unmarried, bequeathed an annuity for a Good Friday sermon in All Saints', Oxford." In the will of William Tipping of Draycott summarised above, which is the only will for a William Tipping who died in 1649, he bequeathed a sum of 40 shillings to "be yearely paid into the church wardens hands in the parish of Allhallowes in the Citty of Oxon, or into the hands of one of them, to be by them delivered and paid unto the minister that shall preach a sermon on every good Friday in the afternoone in the church of the said Allhallowes for ever...." From what I can gather, All Hallows Church was located on Turl Street in Oxford, as was All Saints. It seems likely these are one and the same church and, if so, William Tipping was not unmarried, given the will above clearly shows that he had a family.

In the will of Dame Dorothy Tipping, widow of George Tipping, she names her daughter Mary Barkely. In William's will he made a bequest to his sister the Lady Berkly. Dame Dorothy also names her granddaughter Dorothy Tipping, who would have been either William's eldest daughter (christened in Wheatfield Oxon 5 Oct 1628) or the second daughter of Samuel Tipping, Gent. (christened in St. Mary Magdalene Oxon 29 Jun 1635). William and Samuel were brothers, co-executors of their father's will. William names his brother Samuel in his will.
