  Research Notes:

A manuscript which narrates the descents of the founders of Lanthony Abbey names “Humfredus septimus de Bohun” as son of “dominus Humfredus sextus de Bohun, dominus de Brekenok” and his wife “Alianoram de Brewes”. A writ dated 21 Feb "51 Hen III", after the death of "Humphrey de Boun", names "Humphrey son of the said Humphrey and Eleanor his wife, aged 18 1/2 , is heir".

He succeeded his grandfather in 1275 as Earl of Hereford and Essex, hereditary Constable of England. He was confined to Brecknock in 1282 and the office of Constable performed by his uncle John de Bohun.

The History of the foundation of Walden abbey records the death “1298 II Kal Jan” of “Humfridus de Boun comes Herefordiæ et Essexiæ”. The Annals of Worcester record the death “II Kal Jan” in 1298 of “Umfredus comes Herefordiæ” and his burial “in monasterio de Waledene”. 1

Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford, Earl of Essex, and Lord High Constable. This nobleman inheriting the high and daring spirit of his predecessors, often strenuously opposed the measures of the court and was often, therefore, in disgrace, but he appears at the close of his career to have regained royal favour, for we find him attending the king into Scotland with that monarch (Edward I) obtained a great victory near Roxburgh. His lordship m. Maud, dau. of Sir Ingelram de Fiennes, and dying in 1297, was s. by his son, Humphrey de Bohun. 2
